*Rice is the main and most important food taken every day in Eastern Asia.
Frequency of IgE- mediated rice allergy is about 10 % in atopic subjects in
Japan. Prevalences are much lower in Europe and the USA, where rice is
mostly recognized as a cereal- associated allergen source. Furthermore rice
allergy is more prominent in adults than in children.

The distribution of allergies may differ between countries, which is
probably a reflection of food consumption. For example, rice and soya
allergy are a lot more common in Eastern Asia where they are frequently
eaten as staple foods, than in Europe. Conversely, in countries where
fish consumption is high (e.g. Denmark), reactions to fish and shellfish
is more frequent (Hughes and Mills, 2001).
