Forwarding a FAN alert. We were pretty close on this one. I feed
these animal crackers regularly to my milk allergic toddler. We
were only one character off in the lot number from the recalled lot.
I had just fed these to him tonight (though I'd have noticed the
different looking cookie). These are, however, great toddler
snacks.

MILK AND EGG ALLERGY ALERT

October 8, 1998

TO: Food Allergy Network Members

FROM: Sunshine Biscuits, Inc. & The Food Allergy Network

RE: Sunshine Animal Crackers All-American Cookies

Sunshine Biscuits, Inc. is voluntarily recalling 4, 428 cases of
SUNSHINE
ANIMAL CRACKERS ALL-AMERICAN COOKIES marked with the
date code SO3189A.
Packages marked with this code may contain Butter Flavored
Cookies and not
Animal Crackers as described on the package. Butter Flavored
Cookies
contain low levels of whey, egg, and butter and pose a risk of illness
only to consumers with dairy or egg sensitivity. People who have
an
allergy or severe sensitivity to dairy or egg ingredients run the risk of
serious or life threatening allergic reaction if they consume this
product.

No illness has been reported to date. SUNSHINE ANIMAL
CRACKERS
ALL-AMERICAN COOKIES are sold nationally in 8.5-ounce
packages. The code
is marked on the top panel of the package. We believe the affected
product is limited to the following areas: New York, New Jersey,
Texas,
Wisconsin and North Dakota. However, this alert is being sent
nationwide
to all Food Allergy Network members.

The butter flavored cookies in the SUNSHINE ANIMAL CRACKERS
ALL-AMERICAN
COOKIES package are distinctly different in appearance. Instead of
animal-shaped biscuits, butter flavored cookies are round with
scalloped
edges and a hole in the center.

The recall was initiated after a consumer alerted the Company that
butter
cookies were in the Animal Crackers package. A quality
assurance check
showed that production of the affected product occurred on August
20,
1998, and is believed to be an isolated incident.

Consumers are asked to return the product to the place of
purchase for
product replacement or refund. You may call 1-800-554-5676 for
further
information. To be sure you are aware of the situation, this mailing
is
being funded by Sunshine Biscuits, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary
of
Keebler Foods Company.
