Amy - I trust your children have been tested for PKU - a serious medical
condition where the body cannot process any protein.  Symptoms of
untreated PKU are severe and sound very similar to your child.

In Ohio where I live, state law mandates testing for PKU at birth.  I am
not sure how your state handles it, but it  is worth looking into if you
have not yet.  Although the pku can result in serious health problems if
left untreated, proper medical care can keep a child growing, learning &
generally healthy.
