Mr Jaiteh thanks for the abstract. It is fact that the fragile nature of our environment is anthropogenic. Your research have also increase my knowledge of the situation back home. I am studing BSC Hons at the University of Bolton and I have forward this interesting piece on lad-use changes to few of my professors.
Mr Jaiteh it is sad indeed.Sustainable use of land in our country require effective legislation to protect the physical environment and the biodiversity. Environmental legislation in Gambia are effective and not functioning because of lack of policing and implementation at policy level. Land-use planning can deliver sustainability with protecting without protecting our shared commons-biophysical environment. It seems Department of Planning are only interest with concrete jungle. Loss of vegetative cover and farmland into urban development is not only causing loss of species but engulfing people whose livelihood depend of farming into absolute poverty.
Land-use planning in highly densely country like ours need to be viable/cost effective, and should need target setting of sustainability, environmental impact assessment, conservation, protection of natural resources, conservation and participatory. It seems in Gambia there is no coordinate approach between Government Insitutions such Department of Planning Agriculture, Wild life, Justice, water resource,Environment Agency in areas of protecting the biological resources. Our country need to develop an effective environmental legislation and workable policies because the major challenges of natural resource management is anthropogenic factor
