Bravo to brothers Mo and Oko for the memories, simply super!
For us who were and grew up as 'NDONGO AF-DIEs' those where the days!

"Af-Die" and Banjul as a whole has a lot of history that needs to be
preserved. There is not much going on in the Capital City currently,
a lot can be done to revamp the city.

Thanks for the memories!

Peace,
Kings Solomon
'a NDONGO AF-DIE'

This poem brough back solid memories

This is the inspiration I got from it.
Re-phrasing Mo Baldeh's beautiful poem of Banjul Epitaphs
  (A jouful memory)
  by Oko

  "The Nawaal-kites at Tan"
retreat for rest at to the Ndenx trees
where circumscised boys picked their sacred samba soldeh
From the mangroves filled with taparrka-golo
  pang'e snails poko pokos
  and nyama tong tongs

The Graveyard at the edge of Pa Bokiss
where policeman Norman (lion van 4)
Masked To catch the Mossi headhunters
  Also remember our Guye tegal

  Gali tombal- Gali tara
with blades and dry palm leave sails

  Pahi-skate
At Grant straat and Hill street and many more
Watching the Grace of skate legend Pa Nicola and Chex
gliding through the spyro gyra like kinves through butter

Your first Craven A cigarettes (now picadally)
Banti yomba and Camilia esport Dakar
Cigarettes tin cans of Clipper and Players
We puffed two at a time or more
After dohi juli or christmas false face gift collecton

  The massaqurades of Rai Mbam-Aku
  The mighty Okor Sa
  Die-man Bageey and the
  forbidden mirrors of Alaru beh
  Rankin Pignard/pinaaye carnarvals of
Pakin, Huntin, Bondo and Devil dance

The long lines at Cinema Louis Bright
  Fitzerard otherwise Rai Mbam
Where live music show was first heard
Assited by Modou Bailo queing for tickets
  Also to watch Les Titans
Assisted by Doctor and Kajali (thousand pounds)at Odeon
  Also to watch Dara Sing

  The walls of Box bar
Low for climbing, fit for escaping hidden gate-jujus at box bar
Where Couple Eliman-( Police Si Ngenteh )
Watched the Pah-hi-Bota with his black boots and laced legs
the second division area, filled with lengeh-aart plants
Fit for chewing at the white bottom
A peaceful swamp for hiding to watch a football game
  Right behind Baba Nding's house
homes of the goal nets, goal post, the sweaty shirts
of the boys who live this poem.
  Gracious !

Complimentary Note:: Banjul Epitaphs is a lively poem
  Thanks Mo

  Bye

  Banjul Epitaphs
Where were you
When we folded our dreams
Into kites and let them fly
Over the azure skies
Of Banjul,

Or when we made tiny boats
Out of our homework
And let them sail on Grant Street
Towards the saline mangroves
Behind ‘Af Die, the graveyard
The graveyard of slave ships
And of English greed?

And that night
On Fitzgerald
When Ifangbondi etched Saraba
Into our young hearts
As we searched
For the distant lands
Of folktale heroes
And smoked our first piccadillys
Like virgins.

Where were you
When the pakin chased us
Down Pignaaye and Rankin
We who could not see
Our fears, yet tripped
Over our laughter?

And while the lions
Prowled the deserted arenas
We fought and queued
To see Hemamalini,
The Indian goddess
That stole our lunch
And dashed our hopes.
Where you there
That Friday noon
When they came in crowds
Behind our backs
And broke down
The walls of Boxbar
As the police watched
And even threw our ball
Into the gutter,
Or when scribes and poets
Came to write epitaphs
For our fallen children
Who only flew kites
Over the skies
Of this city
Laying flat like a tongue
In the mouth of The Gambia?
