Very creative forms of resistance, really: using art as a last bastion

against clientelism. Not just Senegal, but it seems that the francophones

are years ahead in integrating cultural forms into modes of political and

economic expression.

Viz: kabongo is something else. It is a direct challenge to Walt Disney

toons that inspire no collective memories in the savannah or the African

jungle as per

nime-pure-souche.html

But here is the story behind it all (for anglophiles):

As for Gambia, the emperor has banned thinking, refining assaults on our

minds by closing down the Independent and radio stations that dared quip

about wrongs. How to break down all those thick bricks choking off every bit

of song that whispers freedom from fear will perhaps be the tasks of this

generation?

cheers,

momodou

Sure enough, if one door is closed, the other is open. Everybody must be

fed, faming is a big business. Not every president can satisfy a multitude

with five loafs and some left over…..

The rights of the Gambian people have to be protected so that unscrupulous

exploiters do not buy up all the ancestral lands (especially where the

blessings were placed.) In Sierra Leone, no toubab can own land in the

provinces. He can lease from the chief, to graze his cattle, but he can’t

say, “This is papa’s land” or “Give me back Papa’s land.

In the 80s, Nigerian freedom fighter and reggae artist Sonny Okosun, used

to sing a lot about Namibia. What mostly saved us (West Africa/ Mali

Empire) from permanent colonisation settlement was the mosquito -. And,

from their wintry point of view, an uncongenial climate.
