Winning start for the Gambia

Mohammed Fajah-Barrie

The Gambians got off to a winning start
Sanna Nyassi gave Gambia victory in the opening match of the African under-17 championship on Saturday as the
hosts beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in Banjul.
Nyassi, who had come on as a second half substitute, scored the decisive goal in the 69th minute.
"It was a really a difficult match as we were put under a lot of pressure in the first half," said the Baby
Scorpions coach Fred Osam Doudo.
"I'm happy that my decision to bring on Nyassi paid dividends as he scored the winning goal."
Both teams squandered numerous scoring opportunities in a match which never caught fire.
The Burkinabe youngsters came closest to scoring in the first half when Oussale Ouebalena headed wide after a
fine cross from Ouedraogo Saidou in the 29th minute.
Three minutes later, Ouebalena was put through by Traoure Sibiri Alain but his shot sailed over the bar.
The Gambians then took complete control of the second half and pressurised the Burkinabe defence until it
buckled in the 69th minute.
Burkina Faso coach Webonga Piouhiri told BBC Sport that his boys did not do enough to emerge victorious.
"My boys faded in the second half and that's why we lost.
"We'll try to correct our mistakes for our next match against Ghana."
Meanwhile, Ghana came from behind to beat Mali 3-2 in Saturday's other match, also played in Banjul.
The Malians took the lead after eight minutes through Diabate Cheick Tidiane but Banahene Michael levelled the
score 60 seconds later.
Mali restored their lead six minutes after the interval, thanks to an own goal by Ghanaian captain Emmnuel
Ansong.
But Ghana fought back and got their reward when George Appiah converted a 72nd minute penalty after Opoku was
brought down inside the box by Berthe Cheick Tiadiane.
In a match of better quality than the tournament opener, Opoku Agyemang then secured victory for the Black
Starlets late in the game.
