AMBUSH AT MOSQUE NEAR U OF M RAISES SPECTER OF LOCAL HATE ATTACK

By: Yolanda Jones and Chris Conley, The (Memphis, Tenn.) Commercial
 Appeal, 6/21/2000

 -----

 Excerpts:

"Gunfire shattered the solemnity of morning prayers at an East Memphis
mosque early Tuesday, wounding one person and prompting some to call
 the incident a hate crime...

"...The shooting occurred as members of the Masjid Al-Noor were about
to start their daily prayers about 4:30 a.m.

"A gunman ambushed a worshiper as he approached the mosque, shot him
and then blasted golf ball-sized holes into the locked doors of the
building at 3529 Mynders, near the University of Memphis...

"...Police arrested Brent Fong, 26, of 3537 Mynders. Fong was charged
with attempted first-degree murder and nine counts of reckless
 endangerment...

"...As mosque members gathered for afternoon prayer, they said they're
used to vandalism and verbal confrontations with Fong and other
neighbors, but not violence. The mosque has been in the neighborhood
 since the early 1980s.

"'We've had dirt thrown on us, and they've done everything from smoke
marijuana to drink in front of us to having their dogs chase us,' said
Danish Siddiqui, president of the University of Memphis Muslim
 Students Association.

"'If this is not a hate crime, what is it then?'

"The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a Washington-based
Islamic advocacy group, asked police in Memphis to investigate the
attack as a possible hate crime.

"'In our experience, these incidents don't have to have persons
writing `Die Muslim, Die,' on the side of the building for it to be a
hate crime,' said CAIR national communications director Ibrahim
 Hooper.

"'We simply want authorities to be sensitized to the fact that this
might be a biased attack and treat it as a hate crime if that is the
 case...'

"...Attacks on Islamic centers across the country are real and
 serious, CAIR officials said.

"In early 1994, a mosque in Yuba City, Calif., was burned to the
ground in an arson attack. In 1995, a center was burned in
Springfield, Ill., and in 1996, a man was charged in an arson attack
at a mosque in Greenville, S.C..."
