The Gambia's relationship with Senegal is no doubt complicated, isn't? To me, the underlying ethos behind the this complicated relationship was very eloquently articulated by the iconic statement of one Mr Kinteh, during the coup attempt of 1981.
Mr Kinteh, said to be a disgruntled former PP member, and recently returned from the UK, volunteered to go and speak on a rebel held radio station. He started by saying that he would like to speak in English for whole world to hear!! Then came out the gem. He said, and I quote " JAWARA DE CALABANTEYA ABDOU JOOF, AND ABDOU JOOF DE CALABANTEYA JAWARA; BUT NOW WEGO KNOW WHO IS THE BIGGER CALABANTE".

Subject: Re: [G_L] Fw: Senegal seeks Gambia help to end Casamance crisis

Thanx Laye for sharing.

Wade has admitted now that he has failed in governing Senegal and that he is now at the mercy of Yahya to solve a Senegalese problem that has been there before Yahya was born. Wade MUST NOT be allowed to seek another term as President of Senegal. If Yahya is the solution to the Cassamance imbroglio, then the problem will remain unsolved for Senegal when Yahya is no longer President of Gambia. The MFDC took up arms because they made repeated demands for a more equitable distribution of national wealth and development. Successive Senegalese governments have been kicking the can down the road. It is time they listen to the citizens of Senegal. Equitable distribution of national wealth and development is not rocket science. Why sacrifice lives of Senegalese citizens for limited personal gains and ambition??

Haruna. The independence of Cassamance from Senegal IS OUT OF THE QUESTION. And will not accrue lasting peace for Senegal or the subregion. That is not what the majority of the people of Cassamance seek.
