It is fascinating to read the various postings as reactions cum commentaries on "Banjul Epitaphs". As I congratulate the poet, I wish to inform all that an organization was launched nearly five years ago that seeks to celebrate Gambian culture and people who have contributed to national development.
This organization called "Fenyal" a Wollof word meaning bringing to light, was initiated by the late Dr. Mam Biram Joof. He sent us a concept paper which we discussed leading to the founding, incorporation and launching of "Fenyal". One of the key activities of this organization is to research, document and publish Gambia's celebrated past and every one is welcome to publish when a call for papers is made.
As a founding member myself, I have the pleasure to further inform you that A.E. Cham Joof is also a founding member of "fenyal" and is its adviser too. There are other very prominent members in this organization...membership is open to all and there are various categories of membership, including membership for those who are resident outside of the Gambia. Yearly subscription is D500.00.
I have a feeling that your various suggestions can be realized through "Fenyal".
Give me your thoughts and then I will create an interface for dialogue between Fenyal and any interested persons.

Good idea. I recall A.E. Cham-Joof took a similar initiative some years ago and published two books on some aspects of Gambia's history, including important details on Banjul and the trade unions. In 1997, he co-founded ECCO, the Education through Communication and Culture Organization.
Baba Galleh and a few other budding writers have already taken up the challenge. Perhaps, someday we will also have our Ngugi or Achebe.

The fact that your poem evokes many pleasant memories of growing up in
Banjul, and does appeal to a lot of people, makes it all the more important
that the rich historical and cultural tapestry that is indeed Banjulian,
should be relived and shared over and over again.
And not only in Banjul, but in the other towns and villages where a
vivid portrayal of the culture and lives of the people can make us all share in
the experience, that is uniquely Gambian.
Our societies are transforming very rapidly, and with it our cultures
and mores are dying slowing. This is where the challenge is, to use our
creative abilities to bring all the memories back.
Imagine growing up in Banjul, and after decades of a long absence, to
walk the streets of Banjul hardly seeing someone you know. This indeed has
deprived the capital of its former vibrancy.
Just for the fun of it, and to relive the experience again, maybe we
should under the heading "Banjul Epitaphs," give account of anecdotal
experiences in the city that brings alive its culture and history. And may be, people
who are much older can dig deeper. Look forward to reading the many
insightful stories.
