Nigerian President Meets With Gambia’s Political Parties
Monday 6th February 2006

By Pap Saine & Ousman Kargbo

President Olusegun Obasanjo of the Federal Republic of Nigeria arrived in Banjul yesterday for a two-day visit.

His host, President Yahya Jammeh, met him on arrival at the Banjul International airport amid a rousing welcoming fanfare from a cross-section of the Gambian public.

Yesterday, through this morning, the two leaders had a formal private discussion on bilateral issues and matters relating to the sub-region.

The Nigerian leader later held a meeting with representatives of the country’s political leaders at the Kairaba Beach Hotel.

In a brief statement at the start of the meeting, President Obasanjo said he came to The Gambia in his capacity as the former Chairman of the Commonwealth and the African Union (AU) and as a brother. He disclosed that his mission is to discuss with the country’s political leaders issues of concern to them to reach a common understanding that would ensure peace, security, harmony and upholding the principle of democracy in The Gambia.

According to our sources, the Nigerian president would impress on the rulling party to sign the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that was negotiated last year in Banjul between the opposition and the ruling party by the former President of Nigeria, Gen Abdul Salami Abubakarr, as a special envoy of the Commonwealth Secretary General.

A meeting between the opposition and the APRC will be held this morning at the Kairaba Beach Hotel to sign the MOU.

Last night President Jammeh hosted a dinner in honour of the visiting Nigerian President at Kairaba Beach Hotel.

The Nigerian president, who last month handed over the AU Chairmanship to the President of Congo Brazzaville, leaves today for Nigeria.

It would also be recalled that since the era of independence in Africa, The Gambia and Nigeria have had fruitful cordial relations.

Many Gambians have been pursuing their university studies and other courses in Nigeria, and the Nigerian government has also been aiding The Gambia in such sectors as the Judiciary, health and the military.
