Wally Mahmoud Hakim, the Lebanese businessman who was arrested last month as a suspect in the murder of Deyda Hydara, has been granted bail after being held for questioning for almost two weeks sources told Daily Observer.

Hakim was arrested by the personnel of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) who alleged that they have found arms and ammunitions at his residence.
According to sources, Hakim who also holds a US citizenship, was asked to be reporting on bail at the Agency’s headquarters in Banjul on a daily basis.
In an interview with the Government owned Gambia Daily, the NIA boss Daba Marenah, was quoted as saying, “Hakim remains the principal suspect among a lot of people already interviewed, including civilians and security officers.”

According to the NIA chief, apart from the guns allegedly found in Hakim’s home, their suspicion was raised after information was received about him (Hakim) and his son’s movement and behaviour and about sentiments or words allegedly expressed by Hakim at the time of Deyda’s murder.
Daba Marenah also said the NIA has been talking to its counterparts to help in their investigations.

“Even our American brothers, we spoke to them, not only about Hakim but any information that we can gather concerning Deyda’s death will help us a lot. Until now, we cannot get from the public and from our own avenues anything leading to the death of Mr Hydara,” Daba said.

Mr Marenah further revealed that the bail granted to Hakim would not stop the investigations. “If we felt that releasing him on bail will hinder the investigation, then we would have detained him,’’ he concluded.
