This sounds very familiar. The present authorities would do well to delve into the archives of the old regime. In the presence of overwhelming bad news from every corner, the PPP government formed the idea into their heads of the presence of massive "on and ofshore" oil and natural gas deposit in the Gambian territorial area
The officials started globe trotting, looking for dubious investors to conive with and swindle the Gambian public. At the time, the only potentially serious investor, Iran, did extensive geological studies and failed to find any commercially extractable oil or natural gas resources.
The authorities in their self delusion continued to keep hoping that their persistence would bring in reckless investors whose funds they could start to plunder. The end of that charade is, as they say now history.
The present trend is worryingly similar. It also reminds me of the exchange I had with a Sierra Leonian friend when this oil frenzy was engulfing us in Gambia. He said sierra Leone was blessed with similar good fortune once, and they went further in the extraction process. " As the digging went on, he said, wey God know say na Pa Saki dey, ee turn the oil to sand sand". I hope ours wouldn't be just that.
