Really Really Interesting.Demba Sanyang is the latest Tabloid. It looks like peace is on the ground but peace is far away from The Gambia. Is it safe to feign peace?

The last card will be placed on the table very soon. What will be before 18 months? A political earth quake.......the fissures are rumbling.

Written by Pa Malick Faye Wednesday, 25 May 2005 Even with about 18 months to go before the 2006 election, the APRC branch in Kombo North constituency, harbouring the largest voting population in The Gambia, has vowed to increase President Jammeh’s votes of over 22,000 in the 2001 elections, to at least 50,000 in the next election.
This promise was made at a meeting in Lamin Village Monday when the district's local authorities gather to formally welcome the new acting chief, Alhaji Demba Sanyang.

Addressing the meeting, chief Demba Sanyang urged the Alkalolu of the district to work harder to promote the ideas and principles of President Jammeh and the APRC, describing it as the only way to woo the few remaining opposition members in the area into the party.

He said since Kombo North is the largest in terms of voter population, they will ensure that Jammeh’s votes increase by 100 per cent from the last elections. “This is no joke or a fallacy but it is based on truth and a good assessment of the political arena in Kombo North. I have the history of politics and elections of Kombo North and I know this is possible because of the increasing support for the Jammeh and the APRC since the last elections,’’ the new chief told the gathering.

According to the new chief, his administrative style will be based on consultation and participatory approach to issues to avoid misunderstanding, adding that it is the only way to promote unity and peace in the area. “I will operate democratically and transparently and I want the support of each of you to help me succeed in my work. Alkalolu should play a vital role in this,” he emphasised.

Abdou Badjie, commissioner of Western Division, said: “We want to make the division free from opposition support and what I have seen in Kombo North is a clear manifestation that we will succeed in our endeavours. President Jammeh wants the country to move forward and since we are the ones who entrusted him with this position, we must strive to make his objectives successful.”

He added that the best way forward for the division is to put aside their differences and forge closer ties in the best interest of the APRC. “I am urging everyone in the division to take the path of reconciliation as that will be my path. By doing so we can be able to achieve our aims and objectives,’’ he said.

Ebrima K Sarr, former APRC administrative secretary and one time parliamentarian of the area, called on party members to close ranks and work harder to achieve the aims and objectives of the party.

According to him, if there is any area in the country to be proud of Jammeh’s presidency it should be Western Division as it is the native area of the President.

Sarr described the new chief as a man of good integrity which according to him earned him a certificate of commendation for honesty by the authorities. He said that when a change of government occurred, Mr Sanyang then head of household was probed by the NIA for his thirty years service at State House. “Nothing was found against him which impresses the authorities. So if there is anything that earned him this post, it is his honesty,’’ Sarr said.

The people of Kombo North, he went on, should accept the will of God and work closely with chief Sanyang.

The APRC constituency chairman for Kombo North, Aji Rohey Touray, said they remain loyal to the President and the APRC. “We must all strive to work harder to build a better Gambia where everyone will be proud,’’ she said.

Salifu Ceesay, Alkalo of Sinchu Alagi, said they will strive harder to even increase the 50,000 votes promised by the constituency to the APRC. This according to him is due to the fact that big developments have taken place in their area which is really appreciated by the public. “We were supporting the APRC without roads, electricity and others then, what about today when we have all these things in our area. We are not fools and no one can make us leave the President and the APRC,” he said. He added that they are fully behind the President as he is a man of peace and development and they will not change him for another person. “Despite the NRP leader residing in my village, they cannot penetrate the area because Jammeh built schools, roads, and electricity too is in the offing. So what is going to stop us from increasing support for the APRC,” he said, describing the appointment of chief Sanyang as a blessing in disguise and one which will boost support for the APRC.

Ansu Jatta, the APRC chairman in New Yundum, echoed similar sentiments, describing chief Sanyang as a man of the people. According to him, the new chief has heard all kind of insults for his support for the APRC but this did not make him to move an inch which shows that he is true to his belief.

Present at the meeting were the Alkalolu of the area, the CEO of Julakay construction, Ansumana Marena, and APRC.
