DAKAR, Dec 8 (AFP) - Senegal will back proposals for an
extraordinary summit of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference
on the Palestinian question, the foreign ministry in Dakar announced
Saturday.
   The west African country is also calling for a "special summit
of the United Nations" on the violence in the Middle East, said a
foreign ministry statement.
   "While rejecting suicide attacks as a form of political
struggle, (the government) could not begin to accept a
disproportionate Israeli response by the state of Israel by way of
murderous raids against the Paliestinian people and an attempt, with
serious consequences, aimed at harming the life of President Yasser
Arafat," the statement said.
   "This is why Senegal asks the Israeli government to halt
violence against the Palestinian Authority and invites the
international community to mobilise further to put an end to the
suffering of the Palestinian people," it said.
   Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade had in July suggested "a
major African initiative to restore peace in the Middle East," added
the communique.
   Senegal chairs the United Nations committee for the inalienable
rights of the Palestinian people.
   The statement said that in that capacity Senegal is working for
a settlement which would see the "establishment of a Palestinian
state alongside an Israeli state within safe and internationally
recognised borders."
