Hi Maila,

I once heard a story told by a 'Jaliba' over Radio Gambia (many years before Tombong became a turn-coat), about a European "explorer" who landed on the banks of our present day Gambia river. The area where he landed was under a ruler called Kambi. Thus those who witnessed his sudden arrival, inviting the European to Kambi, their chief said: "Na nga ta Kambi ya". Thus the name.

There are of course been other versions, some of which have been told here on the L about the time I joined.

Regards,

Kabir.
