SECTIONS:

1. Posting standards
2. How to manage your account, including unsubscribing
3. Where to find the archives
4. Suggested reading
5. When Art De Vany's book will be published

1. POSTING STANDARDS

Be civil. Post in plain text, not HTML.

2. MANAGING YOUR ACCOUNT

The easiest way to manage your account, including unsubscribing, is by
changing your account settings through the web interface at the
following URL:

http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/evolutionary-fitness.html
<http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/CGI/wa.exe?SUBED1=evolutionary-fitness&A=1
>

Alternatively, you can manage your account through email. A complete
list of options can be obtained by sending an email to

[log in to unmask]

with the word HELP in the BODY of the email. (The listserv ignores
anything in the SUBJECT: of the e-mail.)
In particular, to unsubscribe by email, send a message to the same
address with the text, SIGNOFF EVOLUTIONARY-FITNESS.

3. WHERE TO FIND THE ARCHIVES

There are two sets of archives for this list: one for the original list
before it went into hibernation, and one for the period after this
dormancy.

The original archives contain a rich trove of discussion. It can be
downloaded from the EvFit folder following URL:

http://briefcase.yahoo.com/dryeraser

The compressed file contains emails to the list in text form. You?ll
need to use some form of the zip software program to decompress the
file. For Windows users, http://www.winzip.com offers a trial version
of their easy-to-use software.

The archives for the recent discussions can be found at the following
URL:

4. SUGGESTED READING

Keith Thomas <[log in to unmask]>, a list subscriber, has
suggested the following for further reading:

This is my suggested reading list which will help members of this group
learn more about evolutionary fitness generally. There really is no
definitive document just yet. Those who want more information will have
to be "hunters and gatherers" on the internet. Here are a few of the
richest sites I have come across.

Art De Vany is working on a book based on his own
experimentation, experiences and research. As I understand it, this will
bring together information on exercise (and, more broadly, physical
behaviour), diet, thinking, aging, supplements and how they all
interact. He will, I expect,be using the evolutionary framework which he
outlines on his website http://www.evolutionaryfitness.com/.

The closest I have come across to a complete work (that is, dealing with
food and diet) is the web site of Tamir Katz at
http://www.geocities.com/tbkfitness/. He has a lively mind and an
exercise program for sale at a very low price. He does not make as much
of the evolutionary framework as Art appears to do.

A useful review of the available information on food is at
http://www.paleodiet.com/ You will find a wide range of views there,
some contradicting the others and enough URLs to keep you off the
streets for a few weeks. For information on dietary supplements check
http://www.extique.com/

For the exercises, try Pavel Tsatsouline at http://www.dragondoor.com/,
and for weights check http://www.wlinfo.com/ and
http://fochtman.www6.50megs.com/dinosaurtrainingstorefront.htm The key
features seem to be intensity, variety and a minimal use of machines:
body weight, free weights and vigorous, playful activities. No
steady-state aerobic exercise. The Dinosaur Training site is one of
many that have used labels from the paleo lexicon, but does not use a
Darwinian framework. Both Dinosaur Training and Pavel have great
exercise and physiology ideas, but employ "macho" language which appeals
most to some male teenage bodybuilders. Such "macho" language can harm
the spread of evolutionary fitness ideas.

For the more scientific evolutionary approach check
http://www.goanimal.com/welcome/welcome.html and
http://www.world-of-dawkins.com/default.asp The Dawkins site has a host
of stimulating links. Loren Cordain, who teaches courses related to
evolutionary fitness at Colorado State University, has a site:
http://www.colostate.edu/Colleges/CAHS/ess/cordain.htm but has little
information about evolutionary fitness as such. I include it here
because it indicates clearly the academic respectability of the ideas
behind evolutionary fitness.

5. WHEN ART DE VANY'S BOOK WILL BE PUBLISHED

The short answer is that De Vany is working on the manuscript, and the
book will be published when it is published. Asking about it won't
advance the publication date. Until then, participate on the list and
read the wealth of information in the archives and the suggested reading
for guidance. Think.

To unsubscribe from the list send an email to [log in to unmask] with the words SIGNOFF EVOLUTIONARY-FITNESS in the _body_ of the email.
