Well, then I'll say I respect my teacher but I don't totally agree with
him. It's not always easy to determine cause and effect....there are
multiple causes and sometimes they are hidden.
Thanks for responding!

Rhonda

Rhonda,

We all believe in freedom of speech. However, if you say, "I am going to
kill the president of the United States," you have the first amendment right
to say it but you may end up in jail for what you said. If, on the other
hand, you say, "I don't agree with all he does but I respect the president
of the United States," that's your freedom, too, and you won't go to jail
for it. Sure, environment always plays a big role in how people turn out
but it does not negate their personal responsibilities to their action even
according to societal law.

Phil.

I read a interesting thing today in my sociology book; it seems that
sociologists do not believe in free will. They are concerned with cause and
effect. This bothered me. Can a child abuser, a spouse abuser, a bank
robber, a mall shouter then blame his actions on his environment, his
socialization, and never ever take responsibility for his own actions? I
inquired about this to my teacher who said that sociology does not assign
blame, that is a moral issue. So, do not morals come in to play in the
criminal justice system? I wonder if perhaps I’ve chosen the wrong field!
If for example I were to work for a Family Children’s Service department
and someone comes to me to apply for assistance say a single mother with
small children. I would tell her about food stamps, about child care
assistance, job training, and help for continuing education. I would
encourage her to think of what she wanted from life. We all can’t decide
where we are born, in to what social class, or economic situation we grow up
in. I do think we can make choices about our situation. I know it is hard
financially for many. It is hard for Ben and me at times, but I can manage
what we have, apply for assistance with medications and expenses, and do
what I can to better our situation. I know some people don’t even believe
they can be better, perhaps they have heard all their lives they were no
good. Will they always feel that way? I just wonder what you think about
all of these things?

Rhonda
