Phil, Kathy and others who have posted about their school for the blind,
I too have fond memories of our pre-Christmas days at the school for the
Blind in Macon Georgia. I entered school the fall of 1946 at the age of six
years. The school was aobut 150 miles from Thomsaville, Georgia, my home
town though it seemed a thousand miles away to me. We had the normal two
weeks for Christmas also. Before our departure for home and Santa, (smile)
we were taken by bus to ride around various neighborhoods and downtown Macon
to see, for those who had some vision, the Christmas decorations and for
other just to see the lights or hear the music. We too had a Christmas
program of music and drama and the public was invited
Then on the night before going home, we had our school-wide Christmas party.
We had refreshments, candy, fruit and nuts and gifts were given out. There
were gifts given to the person whose name you had drawn and then there were
gifts that were given to special friends. Of course, that was the place to
exchange gift for sweethearts too.
Yes, Rhonda, if only we could keep that child-like joy all the time.
