This involves the much bigger topic of "pure research" and practical
research.

Going back to "the beginning" -- Xerox established PARC, the Palo Alto
Research
Center. PARC did lots of pure research -- the technology eventually became
the
foundation of the computer revolution.

Nerds and hippies founded companies like Apple Computer.

From Xerox's point of view, the money was wasted. Yet the whole world
benefited.
