To make the point that electoral fraud has a long history in the USA is
fully understandable. To point out that this fraud has not been the
exclusive pursuit of one particular party is also justifiable and
pertinent. But to simply regurgitate the Republicans' shabby and spiteful
insinuation is a sloppy moment in your otherwise excellent and erudite
column.

I'm not fighting the Democrat's corner. Both sides are trying to muddy
the nation's perceptions and are in a situation where whatever they say,
whether it be true or false, will have no consequences, in terms of libel
suits etc. The GOP's smear of William Daley... an acidic aside about the
'inherited guilt' of one of their opponents (which has a whiff of vaguely
fascist theorizing about it, if you ask me) is breathtakingly crass. The
corporate media has obediently aired it incessantly. And now you've done
your bit to keep it in circulation too. Here on the Chomsky List.
Frankly, I am surprised. I know it led on to a rather funny comment...

...but I would suggest you should have resisted the tempatation and made
a different Democrat-knocking point: there are plenty available!
