I joined this list because I was on the Interlingua* list on the same
server ([log in to unmask]) and one day it occurred
to me to check out what other lists were available at maelstrom.
When I saw "chomsky" I immediately subscribed, not because I
am a hero-worshipper of Chomsky (or anyone else) but because
I am impressed both by his linguistic theories and his very sharp
political analysis. I wasn't sure if the list would involve linguistics,
politics, or both, but I figured I would be interested in whichever it
was--and I was right. Once I joined the list and began reading the
messages, I figured that most of the other members had, like me,
joined because the name "chomsky" served as a shorthand to
suggest the discussion of political and social topics from a point of
view which would otherwise be impossible to sum up in a word or
two. This seems to be working just fine for most people on the list
(at least those who write in). However, if anyone wants to discuss
linguistics as well as politics, I'd be more than happy to talk about
generative grammar!
