Re: Ossining Cell Tower Opponents Plan a 2nd Rally, Protest at
MCI/WorldCom,
        Other Actions

2/1/00 UPDATE: Opponents of plans by Sprint, the telecommunications giant,
to place a stealth flag-pole cellular transmission tower atop Ossining's
only High School made the following announcements today:

Regional and Statewide Organizing Efforts Begin to Bear Fruit: Ossining
cell tower opponents today called upon organizers in Irvington, Peekskill,
Pleasantville, Spring Valley and Yorktown to plan and take coordinate
action to educate residents throughout the lower Hudson Valley about the
facts regarding cell towers and health. Spokesman Don DeBar pointed to the
success of last week's Informational Meeting, which attracted over 300
people to Trinity Church for a presentation by various medical and health
experts on the potential relationship between certain types of cancer and
the microwaves emitted by cell phones and cell towers. "Given the already
widespread use of cell phones and the rapid expansion of the installed base
of cell towers in the area, it seems imperative that as many people as
possible be made aware of the exact state of current medical science on the
subject" DeBar said. "The fact is that, contrary to the assertions by
Sprint and others in the industry, the jury is still out on the question of
safety, and the existing scientific studies indicate an elevated risk of
brain cancer, leukemia, memory loss and other negative effects. People
should know this before any more of these things are built."

The date and location of the event, as well as the names and credentials of
the participants, will be publicized when same have been set, "but we are
looking at sometime within the next two weeks", according to DeBar.

Members of the Coordinating Council of the Green Party of New York State
have agreed to review a proposal to call upon the NYS Legislature to amend
Section 403-a of the the Education Law to prohibit the use of school
property for cell towers. A vote on this proposal is expected within the
next week. Also, members of the NYS Greens have volunteered to leaflet
outside of State offices all over the state in support of the legislation.
This effort is intended to educate rank-and-file workers about the
potential dangers to children from microwave exposure. They hope to begin
in time for the Lincoln holiday.

Also, Ossining residents have requested the Association of State Green
Parties ("ASGP"), the national Green Party organization, to assist in
bringing the issue of cell phones and safety into this year's Presidential
campaign. The matter is currently in the hands of the ASGP national
leadership. A request was also made by DeBar today that Ralph Nader, the
likely ASGP presidential candidate, make a visit to New York to review the
situation. More to follow on this item...

Plan for Thursday Protest Over Sprint-MCI/WorldCom Merger: Members of the
Ossining group "Safe Ossining Schools" ("SOS") today announced their plans
to protest at the Rye Brook offices of MCI/WorldCom at 11:30 AM on
Thursday, 2/3/00, in order to call attention to their planned merger with
Sprint. SOS members have begun an effort to notify the FCC, the FTC and the
SEC, the federal agencies reviewing the planned merger, about Sprint's
apparent disregard for residents' concerns over the health and welfare of
students and staff at Ossining High School, and to consider the potentially
disasterous health and environmental consequences that may follow from the
continued, unfettered process of expanding cell phone networks which the
approval of this proposal may help to enable. Members are also expected to
protest outside of Sprint's Port Chester offices on this date.

Call Upon Radio Shack to "Boycott Sprint": Several residents scattered
around Westchester County have issued calls upon Radio Shack to stop
selling Sprint PCS products in order to show support for concerned Ossining
parents. Radio Shack offers Sprint PCS cell phone packages. A formal
request to their regional headquarters in Newburgh is expected tomorrow.

Crowd at Saturday 2PM Rally at OHS is Expected to Top Last Week's
Attendance: As promised by organizers of last week's Rally Against Sprint
at Ossining High School, another rally is planned for this Saturday at 2PM
at the school. Last week, attendees were counted at slightly more than 200,
despite the snow cover and sub-freezing temperatures. This week's rally
will feature a mock cell tower with visual and sound effects, as well as
reports on the statewide effort to block the construction of the tower.
Speakers will be announced later in the week.
