I was the person who supplied the information regarding staying gluten free
in Houston/Pearland area. I would like to add that yes, you can get gluten
free food at all the places I supplied, HOWEVER, many restaurant workers
(short of perhaps Carrabbas and Pei Wei) still don't click to the words
gluten free. You must state that you are severely allergic to wheat, rye,
barley and oats (oats being contaminated in most instances commercially) and
reiterate how meals will be prepared with the managers of these
establishments just to make sure you are talking apples to apples. A major
barrier to getting gluten free in the Houston/Pearland/Galveston area is
that many food workers are Hispanic and speak this as their first language.
It would be most wise to bring your English, Spanish and Mexican
translations explaining your diet requirements. Gulf coast fish, shrimp and
oysters are a real treat as they are so fresh so I hope you can enjoy
seafood!

I would also suggest you bring clothing for both warm and mildly cold
weather. There's a saying if you don't like the weather in Houston area,
wait 5 minutes and it will change, especially at this time of year. Happy
2007 to all, Dorina, near Galveston, TX
