I'm not in Birmingham, but I think there's a celiac specialist at UAB - Dr.
Bloomer (?). I don't intend to criticize, but when I needed information
about places to eat in Birmingham, I didn't get many responses - apparently
the support group, if there is one, isn't very active.

Hope you get the information you need.

I am in Montgomery and haven't had much luck finding a doc that is familiar
with it. After IBS meds only increased my pain I finally got back in
researcher mode and self-diagnosed myself, went GF and was able to eat, for
the first time in my life, without abdominal pain, cramps and diarrhea.

I started a group on yahoo for Montgomery area and to act as a storage area
for information I find. If you are interested, feel free to join. Here's the
address:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/montgomery_celiac

We only have 3 people there now, so it's not a chatty group, but I have
stored some good recipes over there (still have to get them organized) and
some other good links and stuff have come through in the messages.

--------------------------------

I just made an appointment with a doctor who is very interested in celiac
and is learning more and more. My daughter goes to him and he's been
wonderful (she's diabetic, not celiac diagnosed). He has at least one other
celiac patient. His name is Nadeem Akhtar. He's Indian, but not hard to
understand. He's been very compassionate with my daughter. He's Assistant
Professor of Medicine at UAB/Internist. His number is 205-989-7254. I am
going for the first time on Jan. 23rd. so I am not speaking from my own
personal experience. I am just saying he might be worth a try. He has tested
my daughter's nutrient levels and helped get them into alignment, among
other things. She is feeling so much better. I live in Huntsville and so
I'll drive 2 hours to get there. The doctors I have seen here couldn't be
less interested in celiac.

Hope this helps.
