Hi All~~

I think responses are finally no longer coming in regarding my query about
which link sausages are GF. I was more interested in link sausage, but I've
decided to summarize all sausage - links and bulk - people can choose for
themselves.

The winner, by far, was *Jones Dairy* (15+), but I couldn't locate any in
Kansas - I'll keep looking or request a special order. Following, are some
of the informative replies I received, which is what makes this group so
amazing!! Thanks to everyone who took time to share your thoughts and
suggestions!! ~~ Ayn in Kansas

Wanted to let you know that *Jones Dairy Farm* sausage is gluten-free
certified by the GFCO. Here's a link:

Also, here are some GF recipes too:

Virtually every single sausage I've ever checked out over 10 years has been
GF. Beer brats are about the only ones I remember with gluten.
_____
*Wegman's* carry a store brand of sausage which is gluten free.
_____
The *Jennie-O turkey sausage* is gluten free...been using it for years as
we cannot have red meat. It is also very good.
_____
I use locally made with four or five ingredients only... but recently have
taken to simply making my own...it is very easy. I know *Trader Joe's* does
some, and there are some at *Costco*, too. Sausage is great in small
amounts for perking things up...I even use it, after putting it thru a
little chopper with many fresh vegetables. But oh....the saturated fat,
cholesterol and salt..... Some are less terrible on these issues than
others.
_____
*Johnsonville* is a Wisconsin company & the fresh brats (except for the
beer brats) & Italian sausages are g.f I think the most other varieities
would be GF as well, but I can't use anything containing nitrates/nitrites
so I'm really familiar with the other brands. Company does know what they
are doing as far as GF but I coudln't find any FAQs on GF on the site.

I do know that ingredients in meat products are regulated by the USDA and
policies were changed in the early 1990s to elminate hidden proteins used
as flavoring. http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Help/FAQs_Flavorings/index.asp#1

There is also a long list of GF *Jennie-O turkey sausages* on the Hormel
site..

_____
If you are still in Topeka, *Ice & Olives* at 29th & Croco Rd has very good
quality sausage both link & ground. Says GF on the packaging.
_____
*Jones* sausage... Also, many butchers in butcher shops and in meat
departments at supermarkets on the East coast make their own and will
verify with you what the ingredients are. I imagine you might have the same
experience in Kansas. I use the turkey sausages, the texture which I
prefer over the chicken sausages. However if you like chicken sausage, *Trader
Joes *has a whole variety(if you have that store in near you). I can't
speak for the pork sausages.
_____
*Johnsonville sausages* are GF EXCEPT for their beer bratwurst. They
(duh!) put beer in this sausage, but somehow don't "get it" that they need
to be declaring wheat on the label because of the wheat and barley that the
beer would contain. But other than this exception, I think all of their
sausages are GF. I'm pretty sensitive, and I've ever had any problem with
any of their sausages. Two other brands that I'm pretty sure carry ONLY GF
sausages (as well as other meats) are* Amylu* (
http://atkfoods.com/brands/sausagesbyamylu/) and *Jones Dairy* (
http://www.jonesdairyfarm.com/home.aspx). However, these are a little
harder to find -- at least where I live, in Indianapolis.
_____
We love *al fresco chicken sausage* (http://www.alfrescoallnatural.com/).
hopefully you can find it locally. i live in western ny. their packaging
states gluten free - not without gluten ingredients which may be a way to
get around the statement of shared manufacturing facility. i'm not sure. al
fresco has several varieties of sausage to experiment with - and also
breakfast sausage.
_____
*Applegate* turkey sausages are GF & tasty!
_____
I eat one of the* Hillshire Farms* hot links most days. I am not sensitive
but I think I found they were g/f many years ago, but I'm not sure.
_____
Aidell's sausage, all are GF EXCEPT the teriyaki meatballs and the cajun
style andoille sausage. they are really good too! they sell them in harris
teeter, giant, and shoppers.
_____
First ask your store if they have a GF list of products.... Many of the
sausage from *Hans and Amy's* are GF and labeled.
