Thanks to everyone for their responses - it seems the majority
response says the flavored instant are good to go! I am very excited
to try and see for myself...
I've summarized the responses below for your information:
*****************
Ann Lee is the nutritionist at Columbia's Celiac Center and is widely
respected as one of the leading experts in Celiac Disease. She was a
speaker at the patient education day at Columbia. I saw her at a
support group meeting in Westchester a few months ago and she told me
that the instant maple and brown sugar packets are gluten free and
safe to eat. My son has been eating them with no problems.

I just sent this to the list but just in case it takes a while, here
is the
response I got from the company just yesterday...I guess we were
thinking
alike!

Hello Michelle,

Thank you for inquiring about our McCann's Instant Oatmeal. It is
always
good to hear from customers that enjoy our products.

I spoke with the people on our Research and Development Team and they
assured me that there is not any wheat, rye or barley gluten in any
of the
McCann's Instant Oatmeal. This includes all natural flavors and
ingredients.

I hope I have answered your question completely. Please let me know
if I
can be of further assistance.

Best Regards,

I tried the regular steel cut McCann's and got very sick, so I
definitely wouldn't try their instant. I am sure some folks can
tolerate them, but not I. Good Luck. Sue

I thought that I read that McCann's were not totally uncontaminated.
If I'm wrong, that's great news, but I thought that I read that they
were tested and contained small levels of gluten.

My son was diagnosed 10/6/05 and missed otmeal very much. But I went
to a meeting of the Westchester NY Celiac Support group in December
where Dr. Peter Green spoke. He was an advocate of eating oats for
fiber and felt McCann's were safe. He did not address the instant
variety. But in late January we decided to try them with Kevin
(turned 11 in late Feb) and we have not had any problems. He is not
extremely sensitive, so if there is a small amount of gluten he will
not feel bad. So, I can't tell they are GF, but my son has no
reaction and I know of one other boy, 18, who also has no reaction to
the instant variety.
