To my celiac listmates and others who know others who are gluten-free...or not....

I know I've had delicious puppodums on my travels with Bob and Ruth's Gluten-free Dining and Travel Club, but I never realized how easy it was to make them at home until I found Sharwoods brand at Whole Foods yesterday. Box says gluten-free and suitable for vegetarians (a request we've been seeing on the listserv recently).

They're traditional Indian "crackers" (more like fried, light taco shells) made from (I quote) black gram bean flour, salt, raising agent: lime (calcium oxide), rice flour, sunflower oil. No artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.

For college students or those who really don't want to fry, they can be heated with or without a brushing of oil, in a microwave for 40-60 seconds, but I didn't go that route. I just did the traditional deep fry in very hot oil in my wok. (Not a lot, just enough to cover the puppodums, which puff up. In a flat frying pan, you're going to need at least an inch deep, but the wok is shaped better for it.) They really don't come out greasy, if you drain them quickly. They fry up in 2-3 seconds! For real. Follow the directions carefully. The oil MUST be hot enough to get them to react immediately.

I also bought a box of spicy ones, but haven't tried them yet. The box says they will keep, cooked, in a closed container for up to a week. They may not last that long. The box has a recipe for a spicy yogurts dip, but I just used hummus, and...I may not get to eat the rest of my dinner. This, with a bowl of salad, may be it!!!

They are about 20 calories each, not counting the minimal residual oil, and are pretty high in fiber and low carb. Watch the salt though, if you're on a low salt diet.

They have a website: www.sharwoods.com.

I also bought some other Indian "instant" packets of vegetarian food at Whole Foods, but didn't use them yet. What a find for college students and those of us who travel who have access to a microwaves. The instant packets are kosher, too, but the Sharwoods Indian Puppodums do not say so.

I'm just sharing, folks. Not an expert on Indian food. I have no connection to the company.
