sorry, forgot to mention that the info about washing your cottons in baking sodak, borax or borattem came from a wonderful book CLEAN AND GREEN.  

BTW, if you want to cut down on the chemicals you use in your wash, you can always use Dr BRONNER'S LIQUID CASTILE SOAP which you can get from a health food store which is concentrated 18 to 1 ..3 squirts do a huge wash....any of the above can be added to wash water ..1 cup ..and you will not need a fabric softener
