A tale from our travel last winter to SE Asia…
My wife and I purchased travel and medical insurance from RoamRight.com. (no affiliation!)
I was glutened at breakfast on the morning we were to fly out of Siem Reap, Cambodia, to Ho Chi Minh City. (Fortunately, the only time in nearly 4 weeks away!)
My symptoms begin like clockwork with a certain nausea two hours later. Within 30 minutes, I’m vomiting repeatedly and in severe gastric pain.
Fortunately, I felt it coming on just minutes before our plane began boarding. My wife and our daughter (travel companion who lives in HCMC) sprang into action. Daughter got on the plane where our luggage was already checked so she could take it all back to her apartment in HCM.
Wife told counter crew I was about to get real sick and they agreed, they did not want me on the plane. I found the handicapped bathroom, closed but did not lock the door, and got sick.
Our airline was cooperative and re-booked us without charge for the last flight of the day to HCMC, about 8 hours later. My wife eventually found me, curled up on the floor of the handicapped bathroom. She stayed there with me for about two hours. After the worst of my vomiting was over, airport staff wheeled me to the day-spa at the airport where we checked in for a few hours. Spa staff had a quiet room with reclining chairs that we had to ourselves, and did not charge us even though we stayed longer than we paid for until boarding time that evening.
When we got home, we submitted a claim for the $78 tab at the day spa to RoamRight. We were initially denied, which did not surprise me because I knew the fine print required documentation that the traveller had seen a doctor. We could only provide the receipt from the spa and proof that our flight had been changed.
But my wife appealed, explaining in more detail my symptoms and our plight: a trip away from the airport to consult a doctor would have been near impossible given my condition for most of that time; a doctor could not do anything more for me, as I just needed time, and such a diversion would have certainly delayed our trip overnight, guaranteeing a much larger, fully documented claim to RoamRight than we were making.
To our satisfaction, RoamRight responded quickly, accepting the unusual circumstances of our claim, and sent a check for $78.
Jack
