It has been a while since I used Lipton Onion Soup Mix in my cooking, but I have never had any problems with gluten reaction when I did in the past. Recently I found a recipe that requires "onion soup mix". At the store I checked the box for the ingredients and ran into this entry: "autolyzed yeast extract (barley)". Needless to say, I didn't buy it.

Is this a new ingredient in Lipton Onion Soup Mix? Or are they just now being more specific in their labeling? And is this likely to cause a gluten reaction?

I don't know much (anything) about "autolyzed yeast extract" though I have run into it as an ingredient from time to time. I hadn't considered it a source of gluten until now.

Can anyone educate me about autolyzed yeast extract in general and Lipton onion soup mix in particular?

Thank you
