Hello All,

Thank you all for your quick responses, I appreciate it.

I stopped in the art room this morning - they are using a plaster
product, not paper mache. I explained the situation to the art teacher,
found the contact # for the company that produced it. Unfortunately, it
was too early to call. She promised to call the company before his
class and keep him out of the classroom if it contained gluten.

Here are the responses I received:

Paper mâché is usually made with a paste made from flour and water. Definitely gluten. Suggest you try providing some other substitute for the flour such as corn starch. The method involves soaking newspaper strips in flor and water and then applying them to a form to dry out and harden . I am not sure if cornstarch would work . Perhaps research on the internet . Good luck. Olivia in VA

Usually the paste is (wheat) flour and water and Elmer's glue. I wonder if you couldn't make it with sorghum flour instead. Ideally you would test it yourself at home first.

I don't know what ingredients are in it, but as long as he doesn't eat anything he will be fine.
** we have the mostly silent form of celiac and my children's routinue bloodwork came back with high levels of gluten antibodies so we are very, very careful. I don't want him breathing in the same room with the stuff, since it's kind of floury. For us, it's not a fear of symptoms but the resulting damage and lack of growth.**

Depends on the glue. Years ago, we did use flour and water to make the paste.

We have used these plaster strips to make masks and they do not contain gluten. They are not paper mache.
