Janice Chisholm asks what connection there might be between CD and asthma?
A study of 600+ celiacs in Finland, published in 1994 in Gut 34(9) pp1215-8
found that 3.6% suffered from asthma, the same incidence found in the
control (non-celiac) population.

However, in the same search of Medline I found a few older cites which
suggest that celiacs are more prone to asthma. The one copied immediately
below indicates that "atopic patients" sometimes respond dramatically to a
GF diet.

AB- Out of 314 patients with coeliac disease, 63 had associated disorders
of known or suspected immunological cause (excluding aphthous
stomatitis and dermatitis herpetiformis). Autoimmune diseases appeared
to occur more often in patients with coeliac disease than in the normal
population, 52 such diseases being found in 45 patients. Of individual
disorders, diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, and ulcerative colitis
seemed to be more common than expected. Atopy (asthma and eczema)
occurred in 7% of the patients. Most of these immunological disorders
developed when the patients were on normal diet. A gluten-free diet and
virtually normal jejunum did not prevent their development, and the
diet had little ameliorating effect on their course apart from an
occasional dramatic improvement in atopic patients.|

AB- A history of asthma, hay fever, and flexural eczema was significantly
more common in patients with adult coeliac disease (A.C.D.) than in
normal controls. Autoantibodies were also more common in A.C.D.
First-degree relatives of A.C.D. patients were more likely than
controls to have atopic disorders. A deficiency of local mucosal
immunity due to abnormal IgA responses may underly this association
    between A.C.D. and atopy.|

AB- An association has been suggested between celiac disease and diffuse
interstitial lung disease of the hypersensitivity pneumonitis type in
several reports from Europe. The present report consists of a study of
18 North American, biopsy-proved celiac patients, who were compared
with an equal number of control subjects balanced for age, sex, and
smoking. The celiac patients showed no evidence of interstitial lung
disease as assessed by chest roentgenograms and pulmonary function
tests. However, a history of asthma or chronic cough was present in a
higher proportion of the celiac than control subjects. Also the celiac
patients showed objective evidence of airway obstruction, as
demonstrated by differences between the two groups in FEV1 (P less than
0.05) and Vmax 50% and Vmax 25% (P less than 0.01 and less than 0.05,
respectively). These results confirm a recent report questioning
whether there is truly a relationship between celiac disease and
interstitial lung disease. Nevertheless, our findings suggest an
association between celiac disease and airway obstruction.|
