Hello Celiac Travellers,
I have read many postings on this subject and there is no defence for
not providing GF meals in flight. The catering codes are international
and well understood by the catering facilities but sadly the staff who
prepare these meals sometimes get it wrong so please complain to the
Airline and hopefully this will help somebody else. Do not be fooled
into thinking that the carrier itself prepares the food as this is often
not the case and many airlines provide facilites world wide on a
subcontract basis to cater several airlines at a particular airport.
Normally your "special meal" is loaded in addition to the catering
required for the whole aircraft so tip number one is if you don't like
what you are given politely ask what other food is available. You
should have some choice. Most long flights have mixed class cabins
which have different catering and cabin attendants are usually very
helpful so if you are in First, don't turn your nose up at the salmon in
Ecconomy! This may take time so be patient. When you make a
reservation, state your requirements, be as specific as you like, then
check by phone the day before travel that the information is "in the
Computer"! As a 53 year old Celiac (diagnosed 7 months ago) and a
Captain of a 747-400 on long distance flights all the time, I have been
very surprised how easy it has been to organise a very extensive and
varied diet world wide. Oh, if you still have problems try flying with
me some time.
