The next meeting of Alamo Celiac, GIG® are scheduled for Thursday July
30th in San Antonio and Friday July 31st in Austin.

Both meetings will be pot luck dinners with a presentation from Dr.
Stephen Wangen of Seattle, WA. Dr. Wangen is doing a Texas book tour
presenting his new book, Healthier Without Wheat. Below this note is
a summary of Dr. Wangen’s book and his bio.

The San Antonio meeting is scheduled for 6:30, Thursday, July 30 at
Covenant Presbyterian Church, 211 Roleto Dr. The Austin meeting is
scheduled for 5:30 pm Friday, July 31, at Faith Lutheran Church, 6600
Woodrow Ave. We will be meeting in the upstairs room, not in our
normal gym location.

Please bring a something gluten free to share. Since this is a pot
luck dinner we need main dishes, sides and desserts. Please be
creative. I know the kids would love it but we do not want the whole
meal to consist of GF desserts. It is important that included with
each item is a listing of ingredients. Some of our members need to
avoid more than just gluten. If the recipe is either original or has
been changed at least 3 times, please bring the recipe. We can
publish these recipes in the recipe exchange section of our monthly
newsletter.

If you have any questions about the meeting or need information on the
location, please visit our Web site www.alamoceliac.org.

Lecture Synopsis for Healthier Without Wheat:
Dr. Stephen Wangen presents his critically acclaimed 2009 book,
Healthier Without Wheat: A New Understanding of Wheat Allergies,
Celiac Disease, and Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance. You will leave
with a much better appreciation for the wide range of issues related
to gluten intolerance and an understanding of how to determine whether
or not someone is gluten intolerant.

After finishing Dr. Wangen’s book, Healthier without Wheat, Anne
Barfield says; “I felt like there is finally a doctor who understands
that there are many complications for some people when they eat
wheat. Just because they are not diagnosed with celiac disease does
not mean they have nothing to worry about or it is all in their head.
When I was diagnosed eleven years ago, it never occurred to me that
any of the support group members would be in our group unless they too
had celiac disease. As the membership chair for eleven years, chair
of the San Antonio group for the last six years and hosting gluten
free Bed and Breakfast guests for four years, I can assure you that I
talk to more gluten free people without a celiac diagnosis than with
one. Most of them would like to know why they have so much trouble
with gluten if they do not have celiac disease. Often they are not
taken seriously by their doctors.

Dr Wangen explains how celiac disease is one symptom of gluten
intolerance but certainly not the only symptom. If you or a family
member suffer from gluten, but are not celiac, you will want to hear
Dr. Wangen speak in San Antonio on July 30, or in Austin on July 31.
Don’t miss this chance to ask Dr. Wangen your questions at the end of
his talk.”

Bio:
Dr. Wangen is a licensed and board certified gluten intolerant
physician and the founder and Medical Director of the IBS Treatment
Center (www.IBSTreatmentCenter.com) located in Seattle, WA . He is on
the Board of Trustees of the Gluten Intolerant Group of North America
and lectures nationally on the topic of gluten intolerance. He
published his first book, The Irritable Bowel Syndrome Solution, in
2005.
