Wow! I didn't realize how much interest there was when I asked the question about Lipton Onion Soup Mix! There is a lot of information related to this and I will attempt to summarize in a way that makes it easy to navigate the plethora of information available about onion soup mix and about "autolyzed yeast extract":

First, regarding Lipton Onion Soup Mix:
1) It is "produced in a factory that also processes milk, eggs wheat, etc. . . . (just so we know)
2) The only potentially gluten containing ingredient is "autolyzed yeast extract (barley)". Form my reading about this ingredient (from some great and truly scientifically sound sources), it looks like the processing of this ingredient results in a miniscule potential gluten remnant (0.09 parts per million according to the Lipton/Unilever representative).
3) That said, the majority of respondents said that they either simply didn't take the chance with anything that had a barley-based ingredient.
4) Among those who actually continue to use that mix, only 2 said that that they had reactions to it. (And we know that there is variation in sensitivity to gluten among gluten intolerant people.)
5) One respondent sent and very helpful link to an article from Gluten Free Living that addresses this question:
6) https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v1/url?u=http://gluten-freeliving.blogspot.com/2010/09/are-lipton-soup-mixes-still-gluten-free.html&k=7DHVT22D9IhC0F3WohFMBA%3D%3D%0A&r=Z4vOXtjN2f5XIWtDZhQLZePFRcRabG7sIbor9tri5Ew%3D%0A&m=G4Fcx4GvIv5zuH5WGHdUPS2v0BQArzvHSardRmCUPRc%3D%0A&s=b714a1747b7bf7bc223717e1cbe560d74ad3ed698a338a881335631c04146c55

Now, regarding "autolyzed yeast extract":
1) This is a terrifically interesting ingredient. One list serve member summarized it this way:
"From my understanding, autolyzed yeast is an ingredient that allows the formation of a glutamate that mimics MSG. When heated, it creates a product that is not labeled MSG as it is not added in the form of MSG." (Who knew?!?)
2) Another list member sent me to a link to some preliminary research done by a dietitian in this area. This is the link to that information:
https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v1/url?u=http://www.glutenfreedietitian.com/newsletter/2013/02/07/update-on-gluten-free-status-of-yeast-extract/&k=7DHVT22D9IhC0F3WohFMBA%3D%3D%0A&r=Z4vOXtjN2f5XIWtDZhQLZePFRcRabG7sIbor9tri5Ew%3D%0A&m=cxReOvMokAP59JlDaDVAa6MSWu5PnpVjBiL%2BDq7LVxQ%3D%0A&s=247911afb76c5173fbf7efe89aa10dfa811a6d15b6739293049b5094ab00812d

Several list members had discovered alternate brands that did not contain gluten, including and Albertson/Jewel store brand, Von's, Shoprite brand, Safeway brand and Tops Markets brands.

Finally, several list members gave me recipes for home-made Onion soup mix (each one is supposed to equal one package):
Onion soup mix
4 t onion powder
2 t table salt
2 t light brown sugar
1t black pepper
1t garlic powder
1t thyme
1/2 t celery seed
3 T corn starch
1 t expresso powder

Onion Soup Mix
3/4 cup dried minced onion 1/2 cup beef bouillon granules (Herb Ox are GF) 1/4 cup onion powder
Combine all ingredients. Store in an airtight container. Use 5 tablespoons of dry mix to equal one envelope of onion soup mix. Recipe yields 4 batches.

Onion Soup Mix
4 tsp beef bouillion granules
8 tsp dried onion flakes
l tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp seasoned pepper

Sorry for the LONG message, but there is a lot to summarize. And thank you to all who shared their experience and knowledge! For now, I think I'll make my own mix.

Vickie
