Celiac Disease Foundation kicked off its 20th Anniversary year and Celiac
Disease Awareness Month with a phenomenal all day conference and food faire
in Los Angeles, California. This year’s annual event, held Saturday, May 15
at the Los Angeles Downtown Marriott Hotel, was attended by over 650 people
and 70 exhibitors.

The program included talks by experts in the field of celiac disease: Peter
H.R. Green, MD, Director, Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University,
Sheila Crowe, MD, Professor of Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology,
University of Virginia Health System and Researcher, as well as Daniel C.
Adelman, MD, Senior VP and Chief Medical Officer, Alvine Pharmaceuticals.

Shelley Case, BSc, Registered Dietitian and author and Anne Lee, MSEd, CDN,
Registered Dietitian, Director of Nutritional Services for Schär USA both
spoke about the gluten-free diet. In the morning they met with Dietitians
for CEU credits and in the afternoon addressed the rest of the attendees.
Frank Baldassare made a return appearance and wowed the audience with his
presentation of “The Missing Ingredient” and his tips on nutrition and
wellness.

Every attendee received a canvas bag, courtesy of CDF Sponsor General Mills,
filled with gluten-free goodies and information provided by our generous
vendors including a full size box of Blue Diamond Nut Thins and a can of
gluten-free Progresso Soup.

The first surprise of the morning was the hot gluten-free pancake breakfast
provided by General Mills NEW Gluten-Free Bisquick with gluten free maple
syrup from Shady Maple Farms and included CDF Sponsor Jones Dairy Farm All
Natural Sausage Links. Everyone agreed breakfast was pretty amazing!

CDF is pleased to announce that General Mills Gluten-Free Bisquick®, as well
as 3 varieties of Gluten-Free Hamburger Helper, will be available in
mainstream markets later this year. Gluten-Free Hamburger Helper will be
available later this summer and Gluten-Free Bisquick® will be on the shelves
this fall. The General Mills booth provided gluten-free product
information, recipes and samples of the new Gluten-Free Hamburger Helper.

The gluten-free sit down luncheon was served and included baskets filled
with a variety of breads from CDF Sponsors Rudi’s Gluten-Free and French
Meadow Bakery as well as breads from Udi’s Gluten-Free Foods, TwiStix from
The Grainless Baker and Parmesan Crisps from Kitchen Table Bakers.
Delicious chocolate and yellow cupcakes made with Betty Crocker gluten-free
baking mixes and frostings were served for dessert! Quite a treat!!

In Lunchtime Sessions, Drs. Green and Crowe graciously answered individual
questions from attendees. Young adults got together and parents of celiac
children met with Chef Elizabeth Kaplan and learned about cooking for
children on the gluten-free diet. The books Celiac Disease, A Hidden
Epidemic, Revised and Updated, by Dr. Green, Celiac Disease for Dummies by
Dr. Crowe and Gluten-Free Diet A Comprehensive Guide by Shelley Case, RD
were available for purchase, and all the authors were happy to sign them
during the breaks.

Elaine Monarch, Founder and Executive Director of CDF, presented the 2010
Champion for Celiac Disease Awareness Award to Jennifer Iscol, of Celiac
Disease Foundation North Bay, CA Chapter. Kari Gai, Miss Kansas City,
Missouri, who is a celiac, spoke to the crowd and the young adults and
shared her inspirational stories.

Throughout the day, exhibitors provided a vast assortment of samples for
tasting. Pizza, beer, cheese, lunch meats, crackers, chips, cookies,
desserts, soups…all gluten free!! A complete list of participating vendors
can be found on our website www.celiac.org

One of a kind baskets filled with products donated by our generous vendors
and beautifully put together by our good friends at Simply Gluten Free,
along with 2 bread machines generously donated by Zojirushi, were raffled
off. The lucky winners walked away with smiles and armfuls of gluten-free
goodies.

The reviews are in and everyone agrees that the CDF Conference was
outstanding -- generating awareness of celiac disease, sharing current
information and expanding gluten-free food choices. Everyone left with
knowledge, product information and lots of gluten-free goodies. Thank you
to CDF Sponsors, vendors, attendees and volunteers for making the 20th
Anniversary Celebration at the CDF Annual Education & Food Faire a fantastic
day of education, gluten-free food and fun!
