I had asked why rice syrup was considered suspect, and what is the story on
citric acid. To summarize, I will post this very succinct note I received:

Rice syrup is made by culturing the rice with enzymes. If the enzymes were
grown in a barley base, some of the barley proteins will be in the final
product.
Barley is a very common culturing medium for food processing enzymes.

Citric acid is made from grain. It is most commonly made from corn, but can
also be made from wheat. Citric acid made in the USA is generally made from
corn; citric acid that is imported could be made from any source grain.

Thanks!
