Hi folks Happy New Year to all. Before Christmas I developed for the first
time in my life a minor paronychia on my forefinger, which is a superficial
infection of the epithelium lateral to the nail plate, in layman's terms a
nail fold infection. I was treated by my primary care md, we did a run of
10 days of levaquin tabs 500mg once a day, burst it, expected it to drain
pus but just blood, and we cultured it which showed small amt staph aureus
(most common staph bacteria). Things looked good between Christmas and New
Years, now it is back. My doc this morning says by phone, go back on 7 days
of levaquin, then amoxicillin 500mg QD for 30 days! I have identified that
amoxicillin is GF, and my pharmacist is looking to see if it is corn free
too but does anyone know out there if generic brands of amoxicillin are corn
free too My doc doesn't think soaks will work (infection under the tissue)
and I should keep my hands dry and clean as possible. Besides Epsom salt
soaks x4 day, any natural remedies out there? I have heard calendula leaf
wraps x3 daily work for skin infections, anybody else shed some light on
natural herbal soaks or wraps? I am also going to increase my Vitamin C
daily. I already take probiotics daily and will be increasing them somewhat
for the upset in normal flora gut bacteria. I have never had to be on
antibiotics this long and it scares me, no I am not a diabetic and aside
from the celiac disease am relatively healthy, age 55. Thanks for any
experienced advice from those who have suffered this affliction and any
naturopath information to get rid of this annoying and potentially very
serious infection. If I get a lot of responses I will summarize. Dorina,
near Galveston, TX [log in to unmask]
