Well, I was glad to find out that I was not the only one nodding off in the middle of working! There were quite a few people who had trouble with drowsiness. It turns out I had a combination of eating too many dried apricots and the lack of salt. I perked right up after drinking the salty water. I will have to check that one out further! Thank you very much for all your responses!

A lot of people felt that it was related to one's diet, targeting high carbs or sugar as causing the crash later. Eating a more balanced meal or more protein was suggested. Staying away from refined foods was also suggested. Eating a meal with a balanced glycemic index was recommended. One could lower the GI by adding lemon, vinegar or a little fat. Avoid a lot of fruit or dried fruit or fruit juice as these elevate the blood sugar quickly. Protein and nuts were recommended.

One person mentioned that celiacs have an increased likelihood to have diabetes and this could be an early sign of that.

One person mentioned foods containing tryptophan such as turkey could cause drowsiness.

A few thought that food allergies, particularly to corn, dairy, potatoes and soy might be the culprit and this was a reaction to the foods.

A common cause was that the blood went to the digestive tract and away from the brain.

Another felt they were more drowsy when they were constipated.

There was a mention that the digested casein strings from dairy caused drowsiness and were tied to other neurological symptoms. There was some research supporting this. A different person gave this link for informaion the dairy. http://nomilk.com/

Some thought it might be related to thyroid or thyroid medications.

One did mention to keep check on the ferritin levels if one was anemic.

One person suggested it may be related to a drop in blood pressure due to a loss of salt in the adrenals from something you reacted to. A quick test for that would be to try a cupful of water with a pinch of salt in it and taste it (1/8 tsp in 8 oz water) If you cannot taste the salt, drink the cup of salty water. Vitamin C and pantothenic acid supplements were also suggested.

Someone mentioned narcolepsy.

Hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid) was mentioned as a problem treated with stomach enzymes and betaine HCL with every meal. A test for this is at this link http://www.drdebe.com/BAKESODA.htm

Tin deficiency may be a problem causing drowsiness as well.
