Thanks for all the replys. We were very interested that ten
of you claimed experience with visual displays (many described in
fascinating detail) which have not happened again since going on a
gluten-free diet.
One person's child (2 year old) solved vision problem with
gf diet.
Two said that the eye phenomena has since reappeared once or
rarely, and then only when gluten had gotten into the diet.
Two continue to have the kind of displays my wife no longer
has (see below); one of them much reduced and one which had been reduced
by a gf diet but is now fully back at age 80).
These results suggest a proper statistical study to
establish the effect of a gluten-free diet would be worth doing.
SIDE ISSUES BROUGHT UP: Someone with diabetes got eye
displays with low blood sugar as insulin reaction.
Another gets some light flashes with migraine headaches.
Monosodium glutamate may cause visual effect.
Neurologist and opthalmologist mention possible triggering
by too much red wine, some yellow cheeses, chocolate, and a number of
other items.
The visual displays without headaches might be called
optical or ocular migraines. We can still wonder whether these are more
frequent among celiacs, treated or untreated, than in the general
population.
It's wonderful to have access to such a responsive,
stimulating List.
Thanks again, Al in East Harwich on Cape Cod
