Below, I have included the responses that I received to my question about
an ice cream that is both gluten and lactose free. The overwhelming
consensus was that most people were very satisfied with Hagan Daz Sorbet
products. I have tried the chocolate pops and I think they are very
good....not ice cream exactly but a good substitute.

I would also like to comment on the quality of the posts and responses that
I see on the list these days. I have been a member of the list for just
about two years and I must say that the recent posts have been very
informative and well thought out. People seem to be more informed and
cautious about the comments they make and it has made the list more
valuable then ever.

I would like to thank and commend the listowners for their perseverance and
patience in bringing the list to this point. Your work is greatly
appreciated and utilized by many.

QUESTION:

>Does anyone know of a brand of ice cream or frozen yogurt that is both
>gluten-free and digestable for someone who is lactose intolerant?

SUMMARY OF RESPONSES:

Some brands of Toffuti, certain flavors of Rice Dream sorbets

(MANY PEOPLE RECOMMEND Hagen Daz Sorbet - both pots and sticks)

Frozen Rice Dream.

chew (yuck) a couple Lactaid pills (this doesn't work for me)

Some of the non-dairy products, although not actually ice
cream, include: Baskin-Robbins Ice (Daquiri, Grape, Margarita and
Strawberry Island Delight).Sorbets: Mandarin Mimosa, Peach Keen, Pink
Raspberry Lemonade, Red Raspberry, Rudolph's Red Raspberry. Dole: Fruit
'n Juice Bars (Peach Passion, Raspberry, Strawberry) Dole Sorbets: Peach,
Raspberry and Strawberry). The last time I was in the Acme Markets Stores
they now carry Lactaid Ice Cream.

There are several that are rice based by Sweet Nothings and Rice Dream.
Imagine pudding are gf/lactose free as well. Dannon's yogurts (not ones w/
fruit on bottom or toppings) are Lactose free/gf also if eaten at room temp.

This is probably not the answer you are looking for but it works for me. I
make my own with ease using a Donvier frozen dessert maker and substituting
Darifree potato-based milk for the cream. I have no financial interest in
either of these companies, but I am a satisfied customer. If you want more
information or the recipe I use, please ask.

I had the owner of the health food store in Matawan call Rice Dream.
The plain "Carob" is gluten free and it says on it dairy free.

There area number of Rice and Soy based frozen desserts that are actually
delicious. My favorite is Rice Dream, the Pecans and Dream flavor. Also,
most plain fruit sorbets are safe. Ben and Jerry's Devil's Food sorbet is
the best thing that ever happened to chocolate.
