Hi List:
I recently inquired about whether anyone had experience of SunFarm Organic carob powder. Among the replies I received were

1. Try Chatfield's - readily available.

I tried Chatfield's and became violently ill, as did my family. A super pastry chef friend informed us that carob is often processed with wheat flour. NO MORE CHATFIELD'S. Others on this list have also become ill from this brand; yet still others report eating it with no ill effect.

2. One person pointed out that an absolute guarantee of gf status of any product is almost impossible, and implied that in order to keep going without becoming paranoid a positive attitude toward food is a large part of the battle.

I reply that once bitten, twice shy. I remember how much I looked forward to the carob solution, and how terrible I felt when I and my family became so ill after those delicious brownies. I'd rather stay off carob altogether, thank you.

Incidentally, I had an interesting experience with Dominican casava bread, purchased at a local bodega. It was divine - absolutely wonderful. Aha!! I thought, another benefit of the gf diet. Next time I bought the same brand of bread, sick as a dog. Obviously contamination. So I think about the first time I tried it and pass it up. Its not worth the gamble.
