For those of you following the discussion on whether Heinz Ketchup is gluten
free here is the latest. I had spoken with consumer affairs on the telephone
and they claimed it was GF. Because of the importance of this statement I
wanted to write to someone "higher up." So I wrote a letter asking for a
full description of the vinegar source and any natural flavoring.
I got a letter today from Donna F. Elliott describing the distilled vinegar
as being from corn sources. Also saying that "No Heinz product that lists
"natural flavors" or "natural flavoring" as ingredients ontains MSG or HVP.
As required by the FDA, all Heinz USA products that contain added MSG or HVP
or ingredients that contain added MSG or HVP are clearly labeled."
Ms. Elliott also gave me a small list of GF Heinz products including the
following: Alba Sugar Free Hot Cocoa Mix, Heinz Sweet Relish, Heinz Vegetaria
n Beans, Heinz Vinegar (distilled white vinegar, wine vinegar, and apple
cider vinegar. She continued by saying "Heinz is currently reviewing all of
their products and ingredients to determine which are appropriate for
gluten-sensitive individuals."
So, that's the latest. Please make up your own minds.
Be well, Taylor Cushmore.
