Heather:

No, not everyone that has celiac disease is lactose intolerant. But Dr.
Fasano said that at stage 2, 3, and 4 it is very common. Stage 4 meaning
the villi are smooth. I think what he was indicating is that many times
people suddenly discover they can't tolerate dairy products. This is
usually noticed before the celiac is diagnosed. This very thing happened
to me.

I couldn't tolerate dairy for years. Typically, after the celiac is
under control patients can tolerate some dairy. But this also depends on
how long the damage went undiagnosed. He said that in some cases of
celiac disease the intestinal tract does not completely recover even if
you are totally gluten-free. Which makes sense to me - I can tolerate
some dairy, but I have to be very careful with it. I went undiagnosed
for 35 yrs.

Listmates: If you ever get an opportunity to hear Dr. Fasano speak you
will not be sorry you took the time to. He is fantastic and has a good
sense of humor too.

Pam
