Under the federal law and the school luch act the school must proved
your child with a gluten free diet at not additional charge. Take a
letter to the cafeteria manager from the doctor stating the need and
why.

Hi All!
I partly need to vent. But, I'm also looking for advice on how to
handle=
.
Included in my child's school fees, breakfast and snack are baked into
th=
e=20
price. Of course, there are no gluten free options. And even though
my =
child=20
won't be consuming the food, I need to pay the full price. Ok. I'm
doin=
g it.
But now every activity my child is involved in, when there is a special
e=
vent,=20
I'm expected to pay the "food" fee and there is no food (other than a
dri=
nk)=20
available for her. So, not only are we paying the expensive costs of
glu=
ten=20
free food - we are also paying for other kids to eat food full of
gluten =
(bagels=20
for breakfast & subs for lunch). Kind of like a triple whammy. I've=
put up with=20
it, but the latest activity has me ticked off. They asked about food
all=
ergies=20
up front. I explained that I would bring my child's food - but got
charg=
ed=20
anyway. When I politely asked if I needed to pay for my child - I
faced =
a=20
extremely defensive person that said the other kids need to eat. I
paid =
-=20
because I don't want to create a problem for my child or cause any=20
embarassment. Now a polite email has gone to everyone explaining that
yo=
u=20
need to pay the money ($10) even if your child will not be eating the
foo=
d.=20=20
What child will eat $10 worth of bagels and subs anyway? I'm sure
they=20=
wouldn't miss my $10. Some might say, it is only $10 - BUT - I'm
already=
=20
paying a lot extra for gluten free food. And, it is happening at
school =
and=20
several activities and any special events that we attend. Isn't the
extr=
a price=20
for GF food enough of a burden for a person with Celiac Disease to
bear?=20=
=20
Are you all faced with this issue? I'm looking for successful ways
that =
you=20
may have handled this.
Regards,
Laura
