Subject: [brams-news] The Science of Opera - June 4, 2012 @ 6:00pm - McGill
University

BRAMS is pleased to announce that its co-directors, Prof. Isabelle Peretz
(Université de Montréal) and Prof. Robert Zatorre (Montreal Neurological
Institute),

will be taking part in The Science of Opera, on June 4th 2012, 6pm, at
McGill.

The Science of Opera

During this 3 hour session, participants will get the chance to understand
the science of the Opera by being presented with research into our
neurological relationship to sound, which will then be interpreted by Karine
Boucher, Aidan Ferguson et Jérémie Pelletier performing pieces taken from
the Opera’s current selection of works. Dr Robert Zatorre (Montreal
Neurological Institute) will provide an introduction to the brain and the
circuits most relevant for music, the nature of specialization of the
musician's brain and necessary brain circuits for musical emotion. Dr Boris
Kleber (University of Tübingen, Germany) will present on the basics of song
physiology and vocal control as well as the nature of the singer's brain and
what makes it special. Dr Isabelle Peretz (Université de Montréal) discusses
her own research on tone-deafness or amusia, what happens when the brain is
out of tune and why some people simply just can’t sing.
