Ken,

I've had both male and female doctors and I don't know that I could
say that one gender over another is better. What I can say is that
the "culture" of the practice probably better reflects how well you
will be listened to. For example, if there are a zillion doctors in
a practice and you have to wait on hold or never get to talk to a
human, and then when you get in the office they have 2-3 patients
waiting to be seen every 15 minutes, no matter how good the doc, you
won't get the time/care you need. I actually switched OB/GYNs after
a horrible experience with the practice when I had my miscarriage. I
had seen one doc for years there, got pregnant and called in for an
appt. and they said he had left and gone on his own. Well, with my
health issues, I thought staying with the bigger practice may be
better so I saw another doc...had issues...and EVERY week for 7 weeks
I was never able to see the same doc even though I said I could come
anyday/anytime. Just horrible. After the miss my husband and I both
agreed I needed to back to my old doc at his new practice. I did and
love it there. I expressed my concerns about what had happened at
his old practice and he and his colleague both said that was why they
left and went on their own because patients just weren't being taken
care of as the bottom line became revenue and not care and they just
couldn't deal with that anymore.

So, a long-winded answer....but check out the way the practice is run
as well as the docs credentials.
