Yoni is doing several things to prepare for his coming Bar Mitzvah - he's memorizing a passage about Noah and the Flood, but he's also doing chin-ups while wearing weights on his ankles, and swallowing a vile protein powder in an effort to grow taller and larger. He measures his height obsessively. He shouts into the wind to deepen his voice. If it works, maybe his classmates will stop calling him Helium.

Yoni's character is well-written and young actor young Yoav Rotman does a good job of playing a guy who is snarky and selfish one minute, sympathetic in another.

Even though he's unhappy with his physique Yoni is not without self-confidence (or maybe it's arrogance) when dealing with a girl he likes or the school bullies.

He's smart and entrepreneurial, too - he earns money for the protein powder by doing homework for the other boys.

Yoni's mother Miri (Ronit Elkabetz) works at a daycare (or kindergarten?) where the children (along with one father) are enchanted with her. (Elkabetz seems to be the default choice for the role of a passionate woman in the Israeli film industry.)

Yoni's father Gidi (Tzahi Grad) has been suspended from his job flying the village airplane, but he hasn't told Yoni thatGidi has evidently been sleeping on the family couch for some time when our story opens.

This not so placid family is thrown for a loop with the arrival of Tomer (Michael Moshonov) Yoni's 17-year-old autistic brother. Gidi placed him in an institution years earlier, when Miri wasn't in a position to stop him. Now the institution has closed and they must bring him home.

Tomer is a real handful who must be watched constantly. The neighbours aren't willing to tolerate his unusual behaviour and they have no sympathy for the family at all.

A certain fragile bond begins to develop between the brothers when Tomer starts reciting the story of Noah with Yoni.

The Flood (Mabul) is in Hebrew with English subtitles. It's being shown at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday April 29 and Monday April 30, at the AMC cinema 2313 Ste. Catherine St. W. as part of the Israel Film Festival 2012. <http://www.israelfilmfestival.ca/>
