Before ADA and lifts on new public transit buses became the law of the
land, ADAPT asked national groups to boycott cities that weren't putting
lifts on buses. Groups like the National Council on Independent Living,
President's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities and TASH
responded. In fact, the President's Committee withdrew their 1989
Conference from San Antonio and moved it to Dallas.

"In San Antonio we have encounter an unbending posture by the top
leadership of the transit authority regarding accessible public
transportation .... We cannot therefore in good conscience support any
conference site where negative and archaic notions permeate the decisions
of that city's policy makers and administrators."

Harold Russell
Chairperson

It appears Governor Roy Barnes doesn't intend to pull the plug or settle
the Olmstead case, therefore all I can assume is he doesn't support the
ADA. If your national organization is holding (like AHEAD and NFB, this
July) or considering holding a conference in Atlanta, please contact me
immediately. If we don't hear from Governor Barnes by noon on April 20th,
we would like to implement a similar strategy for disability and other
civil rights groups.
